Overview

Basil - Ocimum basilicum 

Basil is a highly variable species and needs ample warmth and light to grow well. Sweet  "Genovese" basil is strongly aromatic and used as a culinary variety in dishes such as pesto, "Thai" basil has a more licorice flavour and is often used in oriental cuisine.

How to grow

H.H.A.- 45-60cms / 18ins-24 ins. Sow under glass in April, prick out into 3 ins/9cm pots. Plant in fertile soil during June and water regularly until established.

How to Harvest

When the plant has 6 to 8 leaves, pick out the tip clusters for use in the kitchen and the plant will regrow. Basil is best used fresh and goes well with tomatoes, aubergines and many Mediterranean dishes; add to the dish towards the end of the cooking.

The best method of storing basil is by quick freezing, dry whole sprigs and pack in to air-tight bags.

Issues

Basil has few pests but does appreciate a sheltered spot; it flourishes as a container plant.
