Bay - Laurus nobilis
Bay is an evergreen shrub or small tree, probably best grown in a container on an allotment plot.
H.P. - Bush to tree. Hardy but slow growing. Propagate from 75mm/3ins long semi ripe cuttings. Strike in gritty compost in a cloche or frame. Grow on to plant out the following spring
Bay is a very useful culinary herb, it is always included in a bouquet garni and adds flavour to slow cooked dishes such as casseroles and soups. The dried leaves have a more agreeable, less bitter taste than fresh.
Foliage can be damaged by severe winds and frost, especially when immature.
