Coriander

Overview

Coriander – Coriandrum sativum

A pungent culinary herb with numerous cultivars. Both leaves and seed are used in curries, pickles and chutneys, the leaves are strong and spicy whilst the seeds are milder and sweet.

How to grow

H.A. - 60cms-90cms /2ft-3ft. Sow in April and plant out during May. The flowers are followed by round seed casings which ripen around August.

How to Harvest

To harvest seeds and for dry material, cut the stems - avoiding shaking seeds and allow to dry in the shade. Shake out seed to dry in sun. For fresh leaves harvest the outer growth, leaving the inside intact where new leaves will grow, 2 or 3 harvests should be possible before the plant bolts and start to produce seed.

Coriander leaves are best stored frozen, either in ice cubes or in an air tight plastic bag.

Issues

The young plants do not transplant well in hot dry spells.
