Mint - Mentha species
There are 25 species of mint but the most useful ones for the herb garden are peppermint, spearmint and "Bowles" mint- or round-leaved mint. The leaves have many uses - spearmint and Bowles mint are used in savoury dishes and tisanes, whilst peppermint can be used to flavour sweets, chocolate, cordials and desserts.
H.P.- 60cms / 2ft. Grows best in rich, damp soil and partial shade. Divide the roots in February replanting in moist soil.
Cut young leaves; which can be used fresh or preserved by drying, freezing or adding to vinegar.
Can be invasive, plant in deep containers plunged in to the soil. Powdery mildew can be an issue in drought conditions.
