International Compost Awareness Week

Sunday 5 May – Saturday 11 May 2019

International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry. Throughout the week of ICAW, community and business events are held across the world to encourage and celebrate composting.  Events include tours of compost sites and allotment facilities, school talks and workshops, compost workshops on allotments, talks and lectures as well as publicity on local TV, radio and in the press.


5 May 1pm till 3.30pm, Stokes Wood Allotments compost demonstration site opening, Stokes Wood Allotments, Stokes Drive, Leicester, LE3 9BS

  • 1 pm. Allotment Composting talk and slide show.
  • 2.30 pm Family Activities
  • Workshop 1 Making a wild flower Compost Seedbomb.
  • Workshop 2 Compost Safari.
  • Paint a Compost bin. Design your own creation to paint and display on the site.

5 May 10.30 till 12.00, Lansdowne Allotment Association, Rugby is to hold a Composting demonstration on Sunday 5th May. It will take place on the car park (close to plot 9) of the West Side from 10:30 to 12:00 . Sandy and John Young as County Master Composters will be there to discuss composting and have various methods of composting on display.

They will be supported by Caroline Faulkner of Warwickshire County Council Waste Management Department who will have Green Johanna Composters for sale at reduced prices

ICAW provides the opportunity for the National Allotment Society (NAS) and Allotment Societies across the country to promote allotment gardening and demonstrate their commitment to reducing waste sent to landfill and good environmental practice. While Master Composters,  Garden Organic,  local councils  and others will be organising events over the country during the week,  the NAS, with our network of local allotments, could take the lead in ensuring maximum  community involvement.
