Allotment Sites under Threat

You may have seen reports in the news and social media about the current threats to sites in Huddersfield and Birmingham.

Allotment Campaigners at Cemetery Rd Allotments in Huddersfield have been granted a Judicial Review to examine Kirklees Council decision to convert the allotment land to School Playing Fields without the Secretary of State consent needed for statutory sites. The case is due to be heard on March 18th and the National Allotment Society are supporting their campaign. CLICK HERE to read about their fight and support their campaign.

Walsall Road Allotments are a thriving, multi-cultural community of 100 gardeners in north Birmingham. They are considered by many to be one of the best allotment sites in the country and have appeared on many television programmes, including 8 times on the BBC One Show and twice last year on BBC’s Gardeners World. They are under threat of closure because the 2022 Commonwealth Games are taking place in the same park where our allotments are situated. The Council are looking at a wider master plan for the site, and this includes the land occupied by the allotments. They care for seven (formerly) feral cats who will all be homeless if the allotments are taken away. CLICK HERE to view their petition to Birmingham Council, who they hope will re-consider their plans.
