Going green: Developer is designing homes fit for reconnecting with nature

Eden Retirement Living, a new developer of homes for later living, is putting sustainability and well-being at the forefront when it comes to designing its homes and their surrounding grounds and landscapes.

Pearl House, its new development on Bartholomew Street in Newbury, is a collection of 60 apartments for residents aged over 65 wishing to live independently yet in a secure, safe environment. The scheme is a perfect example of how green space can be prioritised in urban areas. The top-floor penthouses even feature their own private rooftop gardens; even when living in an apartment, each resident has the opportunity to ‘grow their own’ – be it fruit, vegetables or an array of colourful blooms. Pearl House will also deliver attractive landscaped gardens split across two terraces and accessed from the communal areas, encouraging residents to interact and socialise while enjoying this tranquil outdoor space.

Liam Kelly, Managing Partner at Eden, commented: “Pearl House is a fantastic illustration of the values of Eden Retirement Living. We believe it takes more than bricks and mortar to make a home; we want our residents to be healthy, happy and connected to each other and the wider community. Our shared facilities will encourage people to make friends and build relationships - vital for wellbeing, especially in later life. We look forward to the sales launch of these homes later in 2019.”

However, it’s not just in urban areas where Eden is creating open, green space. Its upcoming development in Thorpe, Surrey, set in 27 acres, and in Haywards Heath will also both be landscape-led. Eden hopes to keep the community involved with well-being and ‘growing your own’ by providing allotments and other active green space – making use of the surrounding lakes and ponds.

Across all sites, Eden is encouraging integration, not only with the other residents but with the wider community too. Liam Kelly continues, “At Eden we want to engender greater happiness through the provision of fabulous homes, amenities and the overall setting and environment – whether through the ability to garden or grow your own, or simply relax with friends and neighbours.”
