Wellesbourne Allotments Open for NGS

Open to all: The Wonders of Wellesbourne Allotments

Pick your way past pumpkins that can grow to weigh the same as a man and see tubular grown strawberries automatically watered by solar power - just two of the stops on a plot trail at the Wellesbourne Allotments in Warwickshire on Sunday 17 June!

The village allotments on the Kineton Road, which at nearly 180 years old, are among the oldest in the country, and are once again opening their gates as part of the National Open Garden Scheme to raise money for charities. This year the allotments will also be revealing how a Dementia Friendly plot is shaping up and holding a scarecrow competition which will put visitors in the judging hot seat!

Other  ‘not to missed’ stops include onions that can grow to an eyewatering 1.5kg each and purslane, a herb more often associated with Turkish cuisine. Children’s activities are also being planned so there is something for gardeners young and old!

A tea tent, live music from the U3A rock choir and from David and Carole Sampson from St Peter’s together with plant stalls, a prosecco van and much more will add a garden party atmosphere to the afternoon.

Chairman Ian Hope, whose shed featured on BBC’s Big Dreams Small Spaces programme, says: “These allotments are much valued locally, yet continue to be under threat of development by Coventry Diocese. This is your chance to see the huge variety of produce we grow here , to find out about how allotments can contribute so much to community life and to have a great afternoon out!”

Doors open at 2pm. Entry of £4 with under 16s getting in free! Find out more at www.wellesbourneallotments.co.uk/   follow us on facebook or twitter @WellesAllot and find out the latest on our fight against development at www.sowa.org.uk
