The National Allotment Society - National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners Ltd

A Great Evening with local Celebrity Chef

At the Leeds & District Allotment Gardeners Federation, Social and Presentation Evening, a great time was had by all present despite the difficulties being encountered by Leeds allotment groups at the moment.

Tim Bilton, Chef/Restauranter & Gardener, Spiced Pear, Holmfirth, Nr. Huddersfield came to present the awards to the winners of the Leeds Allotment Competition. He started by giving a brief factual and amusing talk about his restaurant and adjacent four acre garden which supplies most of the fresh vegetables for his restaurant. All those present thoroughly enjoyed his talk and were even given some recipe’s afterwards to take home.

Awards were then presented for

  • ‘Best Leeds allotment plot’, 1st, Brian Jenner, Haleys Field Allotments;
  • ’Best Leeds allotment site’, 1st, Meanwood Parkside Allotments;
  • ‘Best newcomer’, 1st, A Broughton, Meanwood Parkside Allotments;
  • ‘Best Leeds schools plot’, St Anthony’s Primary School.

A raffle was held plus the popular auction of donated gifts which raised a splendid total of £350.00 to be donated to this year’s chosen charity the Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre. Thanks go to all who donated gifts and special thanks to the generosity of the allotment gardeners present who made this goal achievable.

Unexpectedly we were also able to celebrate the 86th birthday of plot holder John McCormack, Greenthorpe Allotments. It’s a good health activity this allotment gardening!
